Midrash is the Jewish tradition of storytelling that expands and completes written scripture – the Oral Torah in addition to the Written Torah. We will use art to make midrashic commentary for the two Genesis stories of the creation of humans (Genesis 1.26-28 and Genesis 2.4-7/18-23).
We will study text, including traditional and non-traditional commentaries and artistic responses, and then will make – and if possible, share – our own artistic midrash. We will probably learn some startling and inspiring perspectives on universal human dignity and gender, among other things, while expanding our capacity for visual storytelling.
