Oak Harbor First Event

We counter dehumanization by bringing neighbors across difference into real relationships that restore dignity, belonging, and shared responsibility.

Dehumanization happens when fear and division cause us to stop seeing each other as fully human. Paths to Understanding responds by creating spaces where people meet across differences, listen deeply, and rediscover our shared humanity.

At PTU, we understand dehumanization as both a personal and a social problem. Human beings naturally form groups, but when those groups are fueled by fear, misinformation, or power, they can slide toward exclusion and harm.

We engage with groups with speeches, classes, and workshops to help them understand the process of dehumanization, how it is at work toward various groups, and how it weakens the fabric of our community: making everyone less safe.

Through our media, we show how people of all traditions, cultures, life circumstances, economic situations, identities, and ages are contributing to our society - we are better together!

Through programs like the Potluck Project and Let’s Go Together, we help people recognize each other as humans, as neighbors rather than threats. By pairing guided conversation, shared stories, and public acts of respect, we help communities rebuild trust, strengthen civic life, and practice ways of being human together—across faiths, cultures, and differences of all kinds.
