I really enjoyed the event held by the Sikh community last week. It was so incredible to see all the similarities between our Sikh friends, my tradition, and those of other traditions.
Key to me was the Guru Nanak’s teaching about the equality of all human beings. Where human beings are tempted to strive for dominance and status over each other, he refused at 9 years of age to take on a high status. He taught people to see the divine in each person, created by one Creator.
“One who looks upon all with a single eye, and knows them to be one and the same – alone is known as a Yogi.”
As I read that, I heard Jesus say to the following his disciples in Mark 10:43-44:
“But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.”
